Career workshop prepares women for new economy; 10 seats free

    July 1, 2020

Women, especially women of color, have been disproportionately hit in the economic crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show. To help women re-tool for the new economy, Ursuline College’s new Institute for Women, Wellness & Work is offering new online programming, with 10 seats available at no cost to those who qualify.

“Designing Your Career to Fit Your Life” will explore options that range from traditional corporate/organizational jobs, to entrepreneurship, to gig and side hustles.

“COVID-19 has disrupted the lives of many people, especially women, displacing them from jobs, largely eliminating their childcare, and making them understandably anxious for their futures,” said Ursuline College President Sr. Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD. “This workshop series will help women in particular assess their strengths and plan for more secure futures.”

Participants in this course will take a comprehensive assessment that looks at their interests, skills, values, and personality.

“Your assessment will help determine what’s right for you and how to approach your go-forward plan,” said Dr. Denise Reading, co-instructor. “Small-group coaching is a critical component of this course that helps participants turn an action plan into a reality.”

Course participants will meet online Aug. 3, 13 and 17 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. ET. All sessions will be recorded so registrants can watch recorded versions on demand. Registration for this half-credit course is $251. For more information about how to qualify for financial aid, please contact Brooke Scharlott, Ursuline's director of academic partnerships, at brooke.scharlott@ursuline.edu.

Dr. Reading is a social entrepreneur (LDR Worldwide, FuturePlans.com, Pazzo, Inc) and member of the Ursuline College Women’s Leadership Committee. After serving 17 years as Vice President at Baldwin-Wallace University, she served as the President of Tri-C’s Corporate College. Dr. Reading is an advisor to education- and learning-focused startups, angel and venture investors, industry associations, foundations, non-profits, higher education institutions, governments, and corporations around the world in the areas of leadership and learning innovation.

The course will be co-taught by Julie Jones, Ursuline’s Career Development + Placement Specialist. Jones is a Certified Mindset and Mental Performance Coach who spent 26 years leading NCAA Division I softball programs.
