Four Ursuline nursing students recently returned from Salt Lake City, Utah, where they learned about the latest research in their field, met with hospital recruiters and heard what the consequences can be of advocating for patients.
One of the speakers at the National Student Nurses' Association's 67th Annual Convention was Alex Wubbels, RN, the head nurse at the University of Utah Hospital’s burn unit who made national news in 2017 when she was arrested for refusing to draw blood from an unconscious patient who had not given consent.
“We were all so grateful for the opportunity to connect with the nursing community outside of Ohio, learn about new research that is being conducted, meet with hospital recruiters from all across the country as well as learn valuable lessons about advocating for patients that we will take with us into our future nursing practice,” said Valerie Koch, president of Student Nurses of Ursuline College (SNUC).
In addition to Koch, three other Ursuline nursing students attended: SNUC Vice President Joseph Roznik, campus Go Red for Women Co-Chair Sofija Pezulev, and SNUC Secretary/Treasurer Jessica Harwood.
Other highlights they reported were meeting the president of the American Nurses Association and the president of Sigma, the International Honor Society of Nursing; meeting with fellow members of the Ohio Student Nurses' Association; and, on their last day, hiking the Utah mountains with nursing students from nearby Case Western Reserve University.
As a delegate for the state of Ohio, Koch was able to vote on resolutions written by nursing students from across the country as well as vote for the next NSNA Board of Directors.
Ursuline's nursing program has been ranked #4 in Ohio by U.S. News & World Report. The undergraduate program boats a 100% employment rate, post-licensure.
